SPRA is an association of subscribing members and was set up by local people in 1992 to give residents a voice in the operation of the Conservation Area. SPRA has the following objectives, all relating to the Strutt’s Park area:
To stimulate public interest and opinion. To promote a sense of community. To improve the safety and amenities. To secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of features of beauty, historical and public interest. To further the welfare and interests of the residents. To encourage awareness of the neighbourhood.
SPRA holds an AGM every spring to elect a committee to pursue these objectives, to review the events of the previous year and to give an opportunity for members to express their views on current issues. A newsletter is distributed periodically to members to keep them in touch with recent developments.
The committee meets regularly between AGMs to review current issues and seeks to address problems that may arise. Matters such as planning applications, traffic and parking issues, criminal activity, park and street maintenance receive regular attention. SPRA committee action has contributed recently to the provision of a new surface road crossing in King Street, the erection of new railings in Darley Park and the provision of double yellow lines at some road junctions in the area.
